Install Virtual Private Network (VPN) software

Install Virtual Private Network (VPN) software

What is VPN and do I need it?

For information security reasons, some of the District’s systems and services are not available directly from the Internet. In order to access these services from off-site (not on District property), you will need to have dedicated software which creates a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This creates a secure tunnel between your computer and the District’s network, thereby ‘extending’ the District network to your location and enabling you to access information securely. You only need VPN software if you need to access these services/systems:

  • Colleague

  • Access to shared drives located at the college or District Office

  • SQL Reporting services

If your device is district owned you may already have VPN installed, if not please contact your College IT help desk

Prerequisites

The following services are not compatible with the district’s VPN:

  • T-Mobile Home Internet

  • Comcast’s “xfinitywifi” public WiFi

  • Consumer VPN services (e.g. NordVPN, ExpressVPN)

  1. Good and stable internet connection

    1. A disruption on your home network will cause your VPN connection to disconnect, causing other district system/services that you are using to disconnect from you as well.

  2. Latest antimalware software installed on your computer

  3. Computer must have been scanned by antimalware software within the last 7 days

  4. Your computer’s internal firewall must be turned ON

  5. You must be running a supported recent version of your Operating System

Once you have all of the above, you may proceed with the instructions below to install.
